What is the Makkar Pure Power Mouthguard?
Simply put, the PPM™is a comfortable custom-fitted appliance, using specialized computer technology to pinpoint and capture your ideal bite position.
Invented by neuromuscular dentist Dr. Anil Makkar, the Makkar PPM™ naturally aligns the jaw, and in doing so, has been shown to enhance balance, range of motion, flexibility, explosive power, endurance and oxygen flow, allowing the user to maximize their performance. This appliance shows how connected your bite is to the rest of your body.
PPM™ users have reported an increased endurance and faster recovery. These results flow from a combination of factors, including a more efficiently functioning neuromusculature, and enhanced oxygen flow through an increased airway.
What is the process for identifying my ideal bite?
Each Makkar Advantage PPM™ is custom-fit by expert dentists applying neuromuscular science principles. The process of properly aligning the jaw position is based on the principles of Neuromuscular Dentistry, which indicate that a “good” bite is achieved when the muscles of the face, jaw and neck are allowed to be at their most efficient state, which is a restful state. The idea is to find the ideal bite position (where the muscles and joints are most relaxed) and build that position into the appliance.
The bite is found using TENS (Transcutaneous Electro-Neural Stimulation) to relax the muscles and then jaw tracking with EMGs (measures muscle activity) to see, in real time, where the bite is most relaxed. When a person is in this position, they are better able to use their strength, increase their range of motion, and improve their balance. Background muscle tension is relaxed allowing them to use their body more efficiently.
What is the history behind this product?
A neuromuscular orthotic was originally designed and used for treating TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome ), and the pain associated with it, including clenching, headaches, and earaches. Patients with jaw problems who were being treated with a neuromuscular orthotic were finding they had increased upper-body strength. The founder of PPM, Dr Anil Makkar, was seeing incredible results in many of his patients who were being treated for jaw conditions. Patients were discovering that wearing their orthotic not only alleviated pain but also provided additional benefits of increased strength and improved balance. From these findings, the PPM was developed. The PPM combines the properties of a mouthguard to absorb the impact from a traumatic hit or blow, while being designed at the most optimal position of the lower jaw.
Chuck Sproule, a fitness trainer, had teeth that were worn down from years of grinding. One day when Sproule was in the gym weight lifting, Dr Makkar asked him to simply place a pen between his upper and lower teeth while doing a set of bench presses. With the pen in his mouth, Sproule was able to increase the number of repetitions he was able to do in each set. The pen brought his jaw down and forward to a better position, relaxing his facial muscles and freeing him to use muscles throughout his body more effectively. Sproule quickly realized the benefit to having his jaw in its optimum position, and this discovery led Sproule and Dr Makkar to apply this technology to a variety of other sports.
How is a Pure Power appliance different from a regular ‘boil and bite’ mouth guard?
A regular mouth guard is made of material that is heated up and then the teeth are squeezed into it. This material is not very durable or comfortable. This is why you see many athletes chewing on the guard and taking it out all the time.
Another type of mouth guard is the pressure-heat laminated type. This type fits on the teeth better, but the material shifts the bite so that the muscles have to work harder. We have found that athletes with these ill fitting guards may even perform worse with this type of guard.
